Former President Donald Trump has reignited national controversy by ordering a sweeping crackdown on what he called a “migrant invasion,” following violent unrest in Los Angeles that left dozens injured and parts of the city in chaos. Trump, currently the Republican front-runner for the 2024 presidential election, declared that “illegals will be expelled” in a fiery address that has drawn both fierce support and criticism nationwide.
The unrest in Los Angeles began late Sunday night and escalated through Monday as protests—initially organized in response to immigration raids in Southern California—turned violent. Demonstrators clashed with law enforcement in downtown L.A., with some reports of looting, vehicle fires, and assaults on officers. City officials have not yet confirmed the total number of arrests, but local hospitals reported treating over 40 individuals with injuries related to the riots.
In a statement posted to his Truth Social account Monday morning, Trump described the situation as a “national emergency,” accusing the Biden administration of failing to protect American cities. “This is an invasion, and we will take back control. Illegals will be expelled, law and order will be restored,” he wrote.
Trump’s comments come as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and Homeland Security agents conduct intensified operations in key sanctuary cities across the U.S., including Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. The coordinated enforcement actions are believed to be targeting undocumented immigrants with prior deportation orders.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called for calm, urging residents to refrain from violence and allow legal processes to take their course. “Our city is hurting, but violence will not solve the crisis. We are working closely with federal officials to understand the scope of these actions,” she said in a press conference.
Civil rights groups, including the ACLU and United We Dream, condemned the raids and Trump’s rhetoric, calling them “xenophobic” and “dangerous political theater.” In contrast, conservative lawmakers and right-wing commentators praised Trump’s firm stance, with some suggesting the deployment of National Guard troops if violence continues.
As of this writing, the White House has not issued a formal response to Trump’s comments or the growing unrest in California. However, senior administration officials have confirmed that the Department of Justice is monitoring the situation closely.
The unfolding events underscore the deep national divide over immigration policy—a central issue once again as the 2024 election approaches. With tensions flaring in Los Angeles and political rhetoric intensifying, the country appears braced for another round of heated debates on how to handle the growing migrant crisis at the southern border.
